Yesterday, a very strong message was sent to all racists out there. And, hopefully, in a way of tolerance not retribution. The billionaire Donald Sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, was handed a lifetime ban by the National Basketball Association.

Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, told a press conference that the 80-year-old billionaire would also be fined US$2.5m, the maximum allowed under the NBA’s unpublished constitution, and that he would now press the NBA’s governing body of other team owners to force Sterling to sell the Clippers. And I would add a plea to people to send Mr Sterling a banana!!

I don’t know about you but, watching the video, I am celebrating like I did last time Brazil won the World Cup.

Silver has only been in the post 3 months and his firm response has been greeted with jubilation among the NBA players who are 70% black. “That they came from an NBA owner only heightens the damage and my personal outrage”, said Silver.

Four days ago, Sterling was heard on a recording released by TMZ telling his mistress, V Stiviano, to stop bringing black guests to Clippers games and  complained that Stiviano, who frequently accompanied him at the Staples Center, was posing with black people in photographs posted to her Instagram account.
